“Obviously in the long-term, it will all be digital,” said Kevin Lewis, head of Blockbuster’s digital strategy. “The future is streaming,” said Steve Swasey, Netflix’s VP of corporate communications.

For both Blockbuster and Netflix, the future is digital. Blockbuster’s brick-and-mortar business is costing them serious cash, and its stores are rapidly shutting down. When did you last go and rent a movie? Old school!

Blockbuster’s by-mail solution, its response to Netflix’s service, accounts for just 2% of the market. Netflix boasts a 97% share.

Yet even with its success in the DVD-by-mail market, Netflix is hurting, it’s the postal service’s largest single customer, spending over $600 million annually in postage fees.

Both companies are already online: Netflix’s streaming service reaches more than 60% of its subscribers, and Blockbuster On Demand is becoming a worthy competitor to Comcast.

Today Netflix released its free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, essentially a pocket-version of its popular iPad app. Blockbuster has also ventured into the app market, and now comes default on the Droid X.

Well let’s see how the story pans out…We say, Blockbuster you need a lot of good luck! You were a leader, although it now looks as though you are just a copy-cat.

Digg founder Kevin Rose thinks the upcoming $99, iOS-powered iTV/AppleTV will change everything when it launches this September:

iOS TV Applications: Expect to see an iPhone/Pad like marketplace for television applications. Video sharing/streaming/recording apps, interactive news apps, and of course games.

a la carte (app) stations: With Apple’s iAds, content producers (eg. ABC/NBC/etc.) can directly monetize and distribute their content. This will eventually destroy the television side of the cable and satellite industry, as your only requirement to access these on-demand stations will be an internet connection. Say goodbye to your monthly cable bill.

.Me Picture/Video sharing: At $99 your parents, grandparents, and friends will have an iTV. Sharing pictures/videos from your iPhone will happen with the push of a button. Imagine getting a notification of new family videos the next time you turn on your TV. My mom will love this feature.

The iPad will turn into one big badass remote control: The iPad will be the preferred input device for the iTV. You’ll be able to editing videos, control games, and extend the interactive television experience. Imagine watching monday night football on the TV while viewing/exploring other camera angles on the iPad.

Cable giant Comcast just surveyed the viewing habits of 1,000 TV watchers across the U.S., not just their own customers. Among the answers, one statistic stands out: 62% of people questioned had time-shifted a TV show. That is, they watched it at some time other than when it was broadcast, either on demand or via digital video recorder.

That may come as no surprise to many of us, but it is a major milestone in the changing landscape of television. Regular old broadcast-dependent viewers are now officially in the minority.

The bigger picture is this: The end of linear-programmed broadcast TV may be closer than you may think. As set-top boxes become the norm, followed swiftly by Internet-enabled TVs, the notion of a programmed suite of shows may lose favor with networks and advertisers. If two-thirds of Americans find time-shifting easy and convenient, then a fully on-demand schedule– with exceptions for live events like sports, of course–may work better for all concerned. Networks would simply promote the hottest new shows in the stable. The audience seems to want this, and it would allow for more precisely targeted ad placements.

Verizon announced today that it plans to bring the full FiOS experience to mobile devices, with the iPad serving as a focus. The details are scarce, but just the idea of a live TV app streaming to mobile devices is enough to bring up a lot of questions.

This news added with Verizon getting the iPhone later this year, really means AT&T and cable subscribers are going to lose a lot of customers. We think Verizon is the next ‘power move’ company.

Swan follows veteran ballet dancer Nina (Portman), who finally secures her coveted spot as the chief performer among her company, and seems to be drawing closer to her artistic director (Cassel). But then a younger rival (Kunis) arrives at the school, and the competition for the lead in a production of Swan Lake sees Nina start to spiral into a world where truth and fiction blur and she starts having some serious issues.

Wonder what ITV in the United Kingdom will think of this? That’s if Apple TV, becomes iTV.

So we hear that Apple TV is due to refresh it self. Steve Jobs knows that the time is ripe to move his experimental project from a slightly popular device into a million selling mainstream success, like the iPhone and the iPad. It’s a perfect time really for Apple to swoop in.

The recent batch of rumors have flown from Engadget‘s own rumor mill. Several months ago, the gadget site broke the news that a radical revamped version of Apple TV was on its way, with data coming from a well-connected inside source. The new version was said to borrow more internals and design thinking from the iPhone. We’ll see what happens….
