Very cool!

Announced today at Berlin’s IFA technology show, Sony unveiled its new digital media service on Qriocity (pronounced “curiosity”), an on-demand video and music service. Available by the year’s end, Qriocity will include “Music Unlimited,” a cloud-based digital music service that will give users access to millions of songs stored and synced through the cloud. Price points have yet to be revealed, but it’s clear this service is aimed at both Apple and Netflix.

A flood of rumors and insights flows right up until a new Apple event, even one like tomorrow’s, which many Apple observers believe will yield little more than a few new iPods. The latest rumor before tomorrow’s event: Netflix on Apple TV, as reported by Bloomberg. We’ll find out.

With NetFlix, Blockbuster & Hulu battling it out, is a new YouTube contender in the digital movie and TV market?

When YouTube started rolling out TV shows and classic movies last year, people wondered what their next move would be. YouTube Movies just opened and it has hundreds of movies loading up as we speak.

“Obviously in the long-term, it will all be digital,” said Kevin Lewis, head of Blockbuster’s digital strategy. “The future is streaming,” said Steve Swasey, Netflix’s VP of corporate communications.

For both Blockbuster and Netflix, the future is digital. Blockbuster’s brick-and-mortar business is costing them serious cash, and its stores are rapidly shutting down. When did you last go and rent a movie? Old school!

Blockbuster’s by-mail solution, its response to Netflix’s service, accounts for just 2% of the market. Netflix boasts a 97% share.

Yet even with its success in the DVD-by-mail market, Netflix is hurting, it’s the postal service’s largest single customer, spending over $600 million annually in postage fees.

Both companies are already online: Netflix’s streaming service reaches more than 60% of its subscribers, and Blockbuster On Demand is becoming a worthy competitor to Comcast.

Today Netflix released its free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, essentially a pocket-version of its popular iPad app. Blockbuster has also ventured into the app market, and now comes default on the Droid X.

Swan follows veteran ballet dancer Nina (Portman), who finally secures her coveted spot as the chief performer among her company, and seems to be drawing closer to her artistic director (Cassel). “I’ve seen the movie,” Downey Jr. said earlier this year. “It’s like the second greatest movie I’ve ever done – largely due to Zach Galifianakis, who is crazy good in every scene, and Todd Phillips, who is just one of the great American directors.

“I guarantee you’re going to love it – I went to the last screening and people were literally saying ‘Oh my god, It’s gotta stop – my face hurts!’”

Netflix and upstart cable channel Epix announced a deal today to bring scores of movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM to Netflix’s streaming video service.

So from Sept. 1, you’ll be able to see movies like Indiana Jones, Iron Man and Cloverfield streamed via Netflix. Epix is a joint venture between Paramount’s parent Viacom, MGM Studios and Lionsgate that is trying to break into the premium TV business dominated by HBO, Showtime and Starz. So far it has agreements with providers like Dish, Cox, Charter and Verizon FiOS.

Avatar 2 and 3 could be shot back to back according to heavyweight director James Cameron.

He confirmed that, though we know Pandora’s oceans will be involved, he won’t even pick up a pen – or, alright, load up Final Draft on his PC – until the projects have officially been greenlit.

“We don’t start the movie until we get the deals worked out,” he sensibly explained, before adding that he’s not “sitting idle” – he’s currently making notes and working on the Avatar novelisation.

The Other Guys, the critically lauded comedy with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, stormed to No. 1 this weekend with a strong $35.6 million, according to studio estimates from Movies.com. The movie earned recommendations from 80% of the nation’s reviewers, according to RottenTomatoes.com, and was $10 million more than many analysts projected.
