The NBA and the Players Association have reached a tentative agreement to end the five-month old lockout and start the league’s 2011-12 season on Dec. 25.

After 16 hours of negotiations Friday, the two sides reached a handshake agreement a little after 3 a.m. ET in New York. Both sides must still get a majority vote from the 29 owners and 450 players to finalize the agreement – as well as negotiate a series of smaller issues like a drug testing policy.

The owners made “significant moves” toward the players on several important system issues that long separated the two sides, although we hear there’s still some tweaking to be done.

Free agency and training camps will start on Dec. 9, Stern said. Under the current agreement, the regular season would have a 66-game schedule that begins on Christmas Day with three games: Boston Celtics at the New York Knicks; Miami Heat at the Dallas Mavericks; and Chicago Bulls at the Los Angeles Lakers.

He may not be a household name in the U.S., but Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna was one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula One racing. Senna was a colorful, often arrogant driver who became a national hero in his native country and an international force in race car driving in the ’90s. However, it was Senna’s tragic death, at only 34, for which he is most remembered–and revered–within the industry. The car crash that killed Senna during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix race was the catalyst for ambitious, much-needed safety measures that have since helped save the lives of countless other professionals. In fact, the improvements and innovations drawn from studying what went wrong with Senna’s vehicle (and that of another driver, Roland Ratzenberger, who was killed in qualifiers for the very same race) would change the sport forever.

Since that tragic 1994 race, no Formula One racers have died on the track. It was a dramatic difference–so dramatic, in fact, that the BBC has called the 1980s and 1990s “the killer years” of Grand Prix racing.

Kelly Slater bolstered his case as one of the world’s greatest athletes Saturday by capturing his 10th world surfing title on his way to winning the Rip Curl Pro in Puerto Rico. It’s Slater’s 45th elite tour victory. His remarkable feat is capturing the rest of the sporting world’s attention these days because Slater, 38, turned pro all the way back in 1990.

But as Slater accepted his 10th world title he dedicated his amazing feat to Andy Irons, the former three-time world champion who was unquestionably his biggest rival.

“If it wasn’t for Andy there’s no way I’d be in this position,” said a tearful Slater after winning the quarterfinal heat that clinched him his 10th.

Irons, 32, sadly passed away on Tuesday, November 2, while traveling back to his home to Hawaii.

(Slater & Irons)

After arriving in Puerto Rico last weekend Irons fell ill, and pulled out of the event just before competition started. After leaving Puerto Rico fo Miami, he sent messages to friends that doctors thought he had contracted dengue fever. He was hoping to recover at home in Hawaii with his pregnant wife, Lyndie, who is expecting in the next month.

Once home and healthy, he planned on celebrating the arrival of his son and preparing for the Hawaiian Triple Crown. He was reportedly throwing up on the flight from Miami to Dallas, and checked into a Dallas hotel Monday night to get some rest for the remainder of the journey. But never responded to wake up calls on Tuesday. Investigators say it will take weeks to determine the actual cause of death.

Here’s a tribute video to Andy Irons.

The wrong team won and not just because of this just awful ‘hand of maradonna’ move. Luis Suarez is without a doubt the biggest cheat in World Cup 2010. This all happened on the same day Paris Hilton appeared in a South African courtroom after being arrested and then cleared on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Lots of money was not going to help Ghana in this situation.

Strange scenes in the final minutes of Uruguay’s quarterfinal victory over Ghana on penalty kicks Friday night. Uruguay’s star striker Luis Suarez proving to be a bizarro-world hero of sorts as he ended up saving his team from last minute defeat at the death of extra time with a blatant and deliberate handball right on the goal line. It got him sent off and preceded a missed penalty kick from Ghana’s PK master Asamoah Gyan and Uraguay’s eventual shootout victory.

Here is the cheating move that Maradonna did all the way back in 1986 to knock out England.
