Gilt Groupe, the online sample sale mega site for fashion, that has made its name as an ultra-exclusive home for top designers, is teaming with up with Target. The invite-only retailer is blossoming into a $500-million business thanks to insider deals on high-end brands such as Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen.

When you saw Avatar, I’m sure you remember the lob-sided, germ-invested 3-D shades you had to wear–you know, the ones with the RealD label that pinched your nose throughout James Cameron’s three-and-a-half hour epic. RealD, the company behind most theaters’ digital projection technology, distributes these free plastic-wrapped shades before each showing. However, eyewear companies such as Look3D and Marchon are moving in on the 3-D glasses market, creating stylish shades for retail. But that’s not a problem for RealD, it just means more profits and advertising.

Marchon’s shades priced between $35 to $100 for each pair, with designer and prescription versions costing even more, it’s perhaps no surprise the 3-D market is booming.

The online fashion market is about to get busier. HauteLook, a members-only online sample sale site, closed a $31 million round of funding headed by Insight Venture Partners (they raised $10 million in funding last year). The company plans to use the money to attract new members, add new sales categories and amp up its social media and mobile platforms.

“People are paying attention to the flash sale space,” Adam Bernhard, HauteLook’s chief executive, told The New York Times. “We’re able to hit the accelerator and grow the business.

Giltt Groupe one of HauteLook’s main competitors, also received $35 million in funding last month and plans to use the money to fund new business initiatives. The two sites have comparable membership bases and boast similar designer names, such as Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta.

WORLD-FAMOUS department store Harrods has been sold, it was reported today. It has been sold by Mohamed al Fayed for $2.25 billion to a buyer understood to be the Qatari royal family, broadcasters reported.

Ken Costa, the chairman of Lazard International, the investment bank advising the family trust on the deal, had just confirmed the sale to him, though he declined to comment on the identity of the purchaser.
