Via CNN> Ryan Gonzalez really wanted to make a music video for his first solo album, but like many independent artists, he had no budget.

So Gonzalez, a Hawaiian singer who goes by the stage name R. Vaughn, found a director with a plan to shoot the project cheaply.

Digital designer John Garcia, a colleague from his Honolulu office, had just bought the iPhone 4 and downloaded Apple’s iMovie app, a program that allows iPhone 4 users to shoot and edit HD video using only their phones.

The two shot the video one morning on the scenic Makapu’u Lighthouse trail overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Garcia started cutting footage at the diner where they had breakfast after wrapping up and spent a total of four hours over the next 10 days making edits.

“Whenever I had time to open up the project, I’d add a clip and listen,” said Garcia. “My entire family memorized the song.”

The result, a simple but professional-looking clip, is now on YouTube and R. Vaughn’s website. Gonzalez accomplished his low-budget music mission. He only had one expense: Garcia’s breakfast.

Despite the iPhone 4′s well-known antenna woes, Garcia and Gonzalez are among a group of artists and bloggers who are optimistic about its potential as a high-def camera and mobile video-editing tool. CNN iReport’s “ Video editing on the iPhone 4” assignment drew in 10 submissions as of Thursday, and iPhone 4 clips on YouTube and Vimeo run the gamut from short films to news reports.

Gonzalez and others say the $4.99 iMovie app — even with some flaws — has the potential to open new doors for artists who have great ideas but no money. Gonzalez believes the user’s ability to shoot and edit video on the phone and upload it to the web may prove particularly useful to independent musicians.

Once the most popular vehicle for music promotion, MTV has just lost its access to the world’s largest record label. Universal Music Group announced Friday that MTV.com will no longer be carrying its artists’ music videos, a big blow for the music channel given that UMG represents 25% of the global market. Instead, the label will broadcast its videos via the online music-video site Vevo, the Hulu-for-music-videos platform that has been growing in popularity with help from partner YouTube. With record labels now taking sides, here’s how the war is playing out between Vevo and MTV.

This is Gabi Gregg, a 23-year-old, Detroit-born, Chicago native, and now New York’s newest New Yorker. She’s also the world’s first TJ, or Twitter Jockey, which entails tweeting music news as it happens. She beat out four rivals for the gig in last night’s live finale and today was her first day at the MTV offices–as you can see from the pic above.

This film/music video is also directed by Casey Chan, a good friend of our Reel Mafia brothers Murray Mile and Wuz Good. The video contains Wax and EOM’s “Relax” and half of Wax and EOM’s “Money”. It also contains a snippet of “Paycut” by Wax and Herbal T.

“So You Think You Can Dance” is known for playing some pretty cool new music. It’s helped popularize artists like OneRepublic, Adele, Sam Sparro, Roisin Murphy and Goldfrapp. The latest “SYTYCD” success story is songstress Christina Perri, whose breakup ballad “Jar Of Hearts” stormed into the Billboard charts after it was surprisingly featured on the show.

Two weeks ago, Christina, was just another struggling artist waiting tables at the Melrose Place Café. But then, right in the middle of one of her worst days at work, a mutual friend (Keltie Colleen, a Radio City Rockette) got the Philly-bred troubadour’s demo into the hands of “SYTYCD” choreographer Stacey Tookey, who loved “Jars Of Hearts” so much, she asked Christina to rush-record a professional version to be used for the above Billy Bell/Kathryn McCormick “SYTYCD” routine back on June 30.

The song then exploded overnight, hitting number 13 on iTunes, number 23 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 54 on Canada’s single chart, number 10 on Amazon’s digital singles chart, and number 2 on Billboard‘s Heatseekers countdown. And it quickly sold more than 100,000 copies. All this without a record deal! Currently it is No.12 on iTunes.
