Despite a decidedly mixed critical reaction on the other side of the Atlantic, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island stormed straight to the top of the box office this weekend. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a US marshal investigating the disappearance of a criminally insane patient, the flick pocketed a tidy $40m during its opening weekend. It’s a record breaker for Scorsese and DiCaprio, giving them both their biggest opening ever.

That’s the verdict here. Shutter Island looks pretty nail gripping.
