Nice (dpa) – last year’s winner Egan Bernal is here, as is his great challenger Primoz Roglic – but some familiar faces are missing from the 107th Tour de France.
The three ex-winners Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Vincenzo Nibali are not on the start list. Not all stars are present even in the sprinters – and a young star is on the sickbed. An overview of some of the missing stars.
FROOME, CHRIS: Since his bad fall at the Dauphiné Tour a year ago, when he sustained several fractures, the four-time winner has not been in shape. In the run-up to the tour, Froome rode far behind the stars. In this condition, he wouldn’t even have helped teammate and tour winner Egan Bernal from Colombia. The Briton now has time for the Vuelta, after that it is over with Ineos anyway. In the new year, he will make another attempt with the Greipel team Israel Start-Up Nation.
THOMAS, GERAINT: His non-nomination was the big surprise. The winner in 2018 and second in 2019 showed weaknesses, comparable to Froome in the Dauphiné Tour. And certainly against the strong Jumbo Visma team, Bernal needs every driver. The Briton must now try the Giro d’Italia.
NIBALI, VINCENZO: For the winner of the Tour de France 2014 it is a matter of honor that he takes part in the Giro d’Italia in his home country. There he is loved by his compatriots, and there the 35-year-old must have the best chance of a top placement given the competition. Nibali and the Tour were never a big liaison, but he was on the podium six times in the Giro.
KRUIJSWIJK, STEVEN: It is difficult to drive a car with a fractured shoulder. The Dutchman was hit hardest when he fell during the Dauphiné Tour. It is still unclear when it will take place for the third of last year.
ACKERMANN, PASCAL: The best German sprinter has to wait for his tour debut. With Emanuel Buchmann as the man for the general classification and Peter Sagan in the battle for the green jersey, the roles in the team have been assigned. But delay is not canceled. Next year, the German former champion will start in France, in 2020 he will still have to make do with the Vuelta.
GROENEWEGEN, DYLAN: The Dutch sprinter is healing a broken collarbone and otherwise he wouldn’t have been a problem for the tour. After he caused Fabio Jakobsen’s horror crash during the Tour of Poland, disciplinary proceedings are still pending against him. In addition, everything in his Jumbo-Visma team is focused on Roglic and the general classification.
EVENEPOEL, REMCO: The young star, already celebrated in his homeland as the future Eddy Merckx, lies flat with a broken pelvis. The Belgian fell deep down a slope during the Tour of Lombardy. He wasn’t scheduled for the tour anyway. Actually he should have driven the Giro d’Italia.
