Paris (AP) – After 3482.2 kilometers, the Tour de France came to an end in Paris. A success for the organizers in times of Corona.
Surprise winner Tadej Pogacar celebrates his 22nd birthday in the yellow jersey today and documents Slovenian dominance in the 107th edition of the tour.
ERA: The Ineos and Sky teams had won the Tour de France seven times in the past eight years. Despite top stars and the highest budget, the super race team lost its dominance this year and played no role in the general classification. Defending champion Egan Bernal drove home early after a burglary.
CORONA: No driver tested positive for Corona in the three weeks, the organizers concept worked perfectly. The drivers dutifully adhered to the guidelines – unlike Christian Prudhomme. The tour manager had to go home in quarantine for a week after a positive check.
EXTENSION: For Thibaut Pinot, who was plagued by a fall, the dream of an overall victory in the Pyrenees fell through. Countryman Julian Alaphilippe had to hand in the yellow jersey after accepting a drinking bottle without permission for the last 20 kilometers. Even after 35 years, the hosts have to wait for the successor of five-time Tour champion Bernard Hinault. There were also only two stage victories for France.
GENERATION: Tadej Pogacar won the yellow jersey as the second youngest overall winner at the age of 21 and 365 days. One year older Swiss rider Marc Hirschi won a stage and was chosen as the most aggressive rider of the tour. And Lennard Kämna took care of the only German stage win six days after his 24th birthday. Next year, last year’s winner Egan Bernal (23) also wants to attack again. In addition, the Belgian young star Remco Evenepoel (20) is making his debut.
MIGHT: Little Slovenia rules the Tour de France. First and second place in the general classification by Pogacar and Roglic, plus five stage wins for the two stars. The country with only two million inhabitants won a lot. There were also two second places from Luka Mezgec.
