Chaos on the A9 in Thuringia due to 14 free-running horses: Several drivers could no longer avoid the animals on the route between Dittersdorf and Bad Lobenstein on Sunday evening, there were three accidents.
People were not injured, three horses were killed, police said. Two accidents took place in the direction of Munich, one because a few horses jumped over the guardrail in oncoming traffic towards Berlin. With the help of the horse keeper and volunteers who lived nearby, the police were finally able to recapture the exhausted remaining horses.
The motorway (district Saale-Orla-Kreis) was reopened early Sunday morning after being closed for several hours. Why the horses could escape was still unclear.
