Palermo (AP) – The Italian time trial world champion Filippo Ganna has, as expected, won the start of the Giro d’Italia in Sicily.
In the 15.1 kilometer time trial from Monreale to Palermo, the 24-year-old was unbeatable, he ran 22 seconds from the race. Joao Almeida and Mikkel Bjerg completed the podium on the descent. Former time trial champion Tony Martin drove cautiously in view of the coming weeks and did not get past 59th in the battle against the clock.
Meanwhile, Rick Zabel achieved a respectable success. Erik Zabel’s son mastered the first mountain the fastest and thus secured the mountain jersey that he will wear in the second stage. With 1:35 minutes, the 26-year-old German was one second ahead of Peter Sagan of the German racing team Bora-hansgrohe.
The time trial opener also provided information in the battle for the pink jersey. In Miguel Angel Lopez, one of the favorites has already said goodbye, he was eliminated after a fall. Former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas came through in 15:47 minutes and took more than a minute away from fellow favorites like Vincenzo Nibali (16:53), Steven Krujswijk (17:08) and Jakob Fuglsang (17:11) . The result is also indicative of the standings, as there are two more time trials scheduled before we arrive in Milan in just over three weeks.
