Hamburg (dpa) – Coach Dieter Hecking leaves second division football team Hamburger SV after just a year, according to a press release.
According to the newspaper “Bild”, the coach rejected an offer for a new contract almost a week after the missed promotion to the Bundesliga. On Friday, several media reported that the signs of Hecking’s departure from the Hanseatic League would increase. The club was initially unavailable for comment.
The contract, which expired on June 30, would only have been automatically renewed if HSV had returned to the House of Lords. This fourth goal was missed by the Hamburg-squad as last season under predecessor Hannes Wolf. The successor was the “Bild” newspaper André Breitenreiter (formerly Hannover 96), Alfred Schreuder (until recently at 1899 Hoffenheim) and Dimitrios Grammozis (formerly Darmstadt 98).
Previously, all parties led by Heckings had hired a second season. The former professional had expressed his general willingness to continue even in the case of non-promotion that took place last Sunday. With this, the HSV faces a third penalty round in League 2. Hecking linked the whereabouts to the condition that the HSV again gave him a strong team. The club apparently could not fully fulfill this wish, because the clammy HSV had to reduce the team budget from 30 to 23 million euros due to the corona. In addition, the two top sponsors jumped off – this means that another 5.6 million euros is missing.
HSV sports director Jonas Boldt, who always referred to Hecking as his “first point of contact” for contract negotiations, was also in favor of continuing until the end. Marcell Jansen, the honorary chairman of the club as a whole and head of the supervisory board of the outsourced football company, also said they wanted to distance themselves from hiring and firing the past for continuity. An analysis of the disappointing season apparently led to a rethink. Due to the weak performance after Corona’s forced break, there were first doubts as to whether Hecking was the right man. Now a new player on the coach bench must try to get HSV back into shape and back to the 1st division.
