Borussia Dortmund again dropped points in the title race. BVB missed everything in the game with VfB Stuttgart, especially in the second half – and lost significantly.
Quo vadis, BVB? Borussia Dortmund has dropped points for the third time in a row in the battle for the championship. Against VfB Stuttgart, the Favre-Elf lost 1: 5 (1: 1) and continued to lose important points at the top of the table.
Silas Wamangituka with the brace (26th, penalty, 52nd), Philipp Förster (60th), Tanguy Coulibaly (63rd) and substitute Nicolas Gonzalez (90th + 1) led VfB to victory in the Westfalen Stadium. Giovanni Reyna took care of the equalization in the first half (30th).
“We presented the goals in rows. Stuttgart did a great job here. They were aggressive and determined. We weren’t,” said a calm Mats Hummels, analyzing Stuttgart’s first victory in Dortmund in 14 years.
For BVB it was the third residential bankruptcy in a row. The four wins that captain Marco Reus demanded at Christmas can no longer be achieved after the first game.
That’s how the game went
Favre changed his team to six places compared to the Champions League success at Zenit St. Petersburg (2-1). The last ailing Raphael Guerreiro and Manuel Akanji returned to base.
Despite the change, the high burden of the past weeks was clearly noticeable for BVB. In the beginning, the hosts were always a step too late against the lithe Swabia. The Dortmunders initially ran after the brave guests. Goalkeeper Roman Bürki had to use all his skills in a free kick from Borna Sosa (7th).
Six minutes later the Swiss would have been powerless, but the strong Coulibaly just missed. Dortmund found their way in the match slightly better after fifteen minutes, but was then countered. National player Emre Can brought down Mateo Klimowicz, who appeared for Bürki, and Wamangituka safely converted the penalty.
Dortmund compensation out of the blue
Stuttgart also stayed on the lead after that, but was unable to improve in this phase. Coulibaly ruled in the penalty area against three Dortmund players and failed Bürki, Klimowicz laid the margin over it (30th). Eight minutes later, Bürki parried strongly against Klimowicz.
The Dortmund compensation came out of nowhere. Reyna took over a long pass from Guerreiro technically well and ended with a lot of feeling. The draw at half-time was extremely flattering for BVB.
After the move, hardly anything changed. The BVB game still lacked speed and ideas. It was flawed too. Before Guerreiro and Jude Bellingham fell again, Guerreiro and Jude Bellingham messed up the ball: Wamangituka, just like last week, scored twice in the win in Bremen (2-1).
BVB then completely disintegrated. Between Försters 3: 1 and Coulibalys 4: 1, Klimowicz hit the post (62nd).
Due to the surprising bankruptcy against the newcomer, the deficit against Bayern Munich could be up to seven points if the record champion were to beat Union Berlin in the evening game (6.30 p.m., in the live ticker on Chillreport).
Turfball Leipzig is the temporary leader of the table, however. The Nagelsmann-Elf defeated Werder Bremen at home 2-0 (2-0) and is at the top of the Munich squad.
