Berlin (dpa) – After Hertha BSC’s bitter cup loss in the first round of the DFB Cup, coach Bruno Labbadia urged his team to improve defensive behavior for a carefree season.
The 54-year-old also emphasized in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” that the Berlin football club will not poach the transfer market thanks to the multi-million investor Lars Windhorst.
It is also about infrastructure and future projects. “The club has to be very smart with its funds. As silly as that may sound, these current funds could be enough for one or two new players in the current transfer market, if you just orient yourself on the top shelf,” said Labbadia.
In the autumn, a total of 374 million euros will be donated by Windhorst to Hertha through his company Tennor. Labbadia, in his opinion, defended itself against unjustified classifications: some clubs in Germany had already spent more money this summer than Hertha had available at all. ‘Yet we notice that we like to be called the nouveau riche. And that’s not entirely true, ”he said.
Basically, the season for the club started with a bitter disappointment after last Friday’s 4: 5 in the DFB Cup at Eintracht Braunschweig. The dream of the final of the pros at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin has already burst and it has been painfully early. Labbadia described the ending as “brutally disappointing”.
Ultimately, Hertha lost because we made way too many individual mistakes defensively. “We have to change that as soon as possible. The point is that we defend our own goal with all our strength. Then we get a different stability in our game,” said Labbadia.
