Villard-de-Lans (dpa) – The former cycling stars Didi Thurau and Olaf Ludwig were enthusiastic about Lennard Kämna after his stage victory and have confidence in the youngster for the future.
“He is an exceptional talent and has great potential. He grows at the end of a tour. That gives courage for the future when everything fits on the stage,” said Thurau of the German news agency. The man from Frankfurt even rode in the yellow jersey for 15 days in 1977 and won a total of six tour stages.
Ludwig sees it the same way. “He’s very aesthetically pleasing on the bike, has a high level of performance and is tactically smart. We will have a lot of fun with the driver for years to come,” said the 1988 Olympic dpa champion to Kämna. Comparisons with ex-tour winner Jan Ullrich are incorrect, but Ludwig emphasized: “If such a young driver rides to the end so steadily and convincingly twice, there is still potential.”
Kämna, who has just turned 24, has won the Alpine stage to Villard-de-Lans on Tuesday. It wasn’t until Friday that he finished second on Puy Mary when he reached the mountain.
