Berlin (AP) – FC Schalke 04 does not want to rush about anything in the search for a successor to the released coach David Wagner.
“It’s not about the big name. It’s about what type of coach this team needs. We scan the candidates. When making a decision, quality comes before speed,” said sports director Jochen Schneider of “Bild”.
Manuel Baum is the favorite. The 41-year-old coached FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga from 2016 to 2019. He has been the U20 national coach since July 2019. The former Schalke trainer and sports director Ralf Rangnick should also be in discussion.
According to “Bild”, Valérien Ismaël should also be a candidate for the Gelsenkirchen team. The former Bundesliga player of SV Werder Bremen and FC Bayern Munich coached Austrian Bundesliga club Linzer ASK last season. In the Bundesliga, the 44-year-old Frenchman took care of VfL Wolfsburg from 2016 to 2017.
