In Belarus, controversial President Alexander Lukashenko was surprisingly sworn in for the new term – usually with an announcement, this time without.
Controversial Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been placed in office for the sixth time. The official Belta news agency reported this on Wednesday. The inauguration took place without prior notice. Usually the ceremony is announced days in advance as an important state act.
The opposition has accused Lukashenko of electoral fraud after the vote on August 9. Since then, there have been massive protests against the head of state, who has ruled authoritatively for more than twenty years. The EU does not recognize Lukashenko’s re-election and is planning sanctions against about 40 Belarusian government representatives.
