New York (AP) – After the disqualification of world number one Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev is finally one of the favorites at the US Open.
The German number one has improved from match to match in New York so far and is aiming for his first semi-final at the US Open next Tuesday (second match after 6pm / Eurosport) against Croatian Borna Coric. “Now it will be one of the guys who wins the thing,” Zverev said of the new starting position afterwards for top favorite Djokovic.
For Zverev it is already the best US Open of his career. But the 23-year-old does not want to be satisfied with that. After the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January, the second Grand Slam tournament of the tennis year must now continue.
But first of all, the difficult task against Coric awaits Zverev. His record against the Croat is negative, the Hamburg resident has lost three out of four matches. This was also the case in 2017 in Flushing Meadows, when Zverev had to admit a defeat in four sets in the second round.
German tennis legend Boris Becker entrusts Zverev with the big coup this year. “It is certainly an opportunity for him, but it is an opportunity for everyone left in the tournament. He will still have a lot of chances to win a Grand Slam, he could start here at the US Open,” said Becker about the German number one.
The decisive factor now is which player without Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer can best handle the pressure in this special situation. “It can be nerve-racking to get this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said three-time Wimbledon winner Becker.
