Azerbaijan and Armenia have agreed to an American-Brocade ceasefire. Both countries have agreed to a cease-fire in the third phase. It is expected to be effective from 8 am local time on Monday. But in the end it is doubtful how long it will last.
Washington’s mediation led to a long meeting between the two countries since Friday. Finally, for the third time, both sides have reached a humanitarian decision for a cease-fire. But there was also shooting between the two countries on Sunday night.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been fighting Nagorno-Karbakh for almost a month. Russia has been trying to bring the two countries into peace negotiations since the beginning. The ceasefire was declared twice with the mediation of Moscow. But each time a ceasefire was declared, it was violated by both sides within minutes.
Meanwhile, last week, Moscow again put the two countries on the negotiating table. Foreign ministers of the two warring countries met last Thursday in the presence of the Russian foreign minister. But this did not happen.
Later, representatives from Azerbaijan and Armenia held long meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the country’s diplomats. It was at that meeting that a new ceasefire was decided. A joint statement from the United States, Azerbaijan and Armenia confirmed the case. The statement said that the ceasefire is being declared from 8 am on Monday morning due to humanitarian reasons.
Even after this joint statement, the question remains how durable the ceasefire is. In a post on Twitter on Sunday morning, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said that everyone has the right to protect their country. Aseri will protect his country till the last day.
The Armenian war plane crashed into the Azerbaijan border while a ceasefire agreement was being signed between the two countries mediated by Washington. Later it was brought down by the Azeri army.
Iran says it has increased its military presence on the border with Azerbaijan and Armenia by leaps and bounds. This is so that Iran is not harmed in the war between the two neighboring countries. Earlier, shelling between Azerbaijan and Armenia destroyed a border area with Iran. Tehran strongly opposed the incident to both countries.
The old conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karbakh region resumed on 26 September. Russian President Vladimir Putin says that at least 5,000 people have already been killed in the conflict. The death toll is increasing. More than two thousand people on both sides have lost their lives.
Azeri forces have killed at least three Armenian war planes. Armenia has acknowledged the massive loss of its country in the ongoing conflict. In a television speech, Prime Minister Nicole Pashinian acknowledged the reality. He said that Armenia suffered “many casualties”. However, the army is still under the control of Karabakh.
Armenia is a member of the former Soviet Union military alliance led by Russia. Again, Turkey is a close ally of Azerbaijan. Turkish and Azeri politicians use a sentence to describe the relationship between the two countries. It is, one nation, two countries. ‘People of both countries have similarity in language, culture and religion. Source: DW, BBC
