Barranquilla (dpa) – Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen is threatened with a protracted failure of new hire Santiago Arias.
The right back sustained a potentially serious foot injury during the World Cup qualifying match with the Colombian national team against Venezuela (3-0). An exact diagnosis was not yet known.
In a duel, the 28-year-old completely twisted his foot, and bystanders were visibly shocked. “We’re with you,” tweeted former Bayern professional James Rodriguez. Star striker Radamel Falcao wrote, “We know you’ll come back stronger.” There were plenty of other encouraging tweets under the hashtag #FuerzaSanti.
Bayer had only loaned Arias from Atlético Madrid for a year two and a half weeks ago and also has a purchase option. In the Bundesliga match last Saturday in Stuttgart (1-1) Arias made his debut for Werkself in 90 minutes.
