Iranian blogger and dissident Ruhollah Sam was executed on Saturday. According to the state news agency IRNA, 47-year-old Sam has been hanged in Tehran. According to IRNA, the judicial authority in Tehran has confirmed the execution.
Sam was sentenced to death by a revolutionary court in Tehran in June. The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court this week. He was accused of using his “Amad News” website for propaganda against Iran’s leaders and provoking protests, some of which were violent.

In particular, the blogger had strongly condemned the alleged electoral fraud in the 2009 presidential election and the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He then fled to France via Malaysia. Sam had also several times given interviews to Persian-speaking broadcasters abroad, in which he constantly criticized the Iranian leadership.
According to media reports, the blogger was lured by Iranian security forces to neighboring Iraq, arrested there in the fall of last year and then transferred to Iran. Since then, Sam had pleaded guilty to several court sessions and asked for forgiveness.
