Spielberg (dpa) – Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas surprisingly took first pole position of the season when Formula 1 was restarted in Austria.
On Saturday, the Finn in Spielberg relegated his favorite teammate Lewis Hamilton to second place with twelve thousandths of a second. Third was Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who had won the race in Styria in the past two years.
It is the twelfth pole position in his career for Bottas. Defending champion Hamilton had been faster in all training sessions. Sebastian Vettel failed in eleventh place early in qualifying in the Ferrari.
