Mainz (dpa) – The club chairman of FSV Mainz 05 has announced after the players’ training boycott in solidarity with striker Adam Szalai that the incident will be addressed.
“The players’ behavior not to train is a step that I personally would not have thought possible,” said Stefan Hofmann, according to a statement from the Bundesliga club. This shocked the whole club. “Therefore, as the club’s management, we cannot just go back to the agenda. We are currently working thoroughly through this process,” he explains.
Together with the chairman of the supervisory board, Detlev Höhne, he talked to the players. “We want to clarify the whole situation with regard to the fundamental issues that concern the club. The team is dealing with issues that are more complex than we expected,” Hofmann said. The team had built up a lot of emotionality, which spontaneously let go when Szalai was involved in the training.
At the same time, he announced that he wanted to prevent these developments in the future through better internal communication. “It is the wish of the team council that their position remains internal and is handled internally – and that no player speaks out publicly about it,” said Hofmann.
He also announced that the team had been informed in recent days that the waiver of the previous season’s salary could not be refunded. “We meet the additional communication needs of the team that arise from this,” said Hofmann. “In the original agreement in March, a refund was considered an option should the club’s economic situation improve.” The economic situation for Mainz 05 tends to worsen due to the ongoing corona pandemic.
