Wetzlar (AP) – The handball players of the THW Kiel have been defeated for the first time in the still young Bundesliga season.
On the third day of play, the record champion lost to HSG Wetzlar 22:31 (11:18). Maximilian Holst scored eight goals for Wetzlar, Niclas Ekberg scored five goals for THW.
The Kielers acted without concept, especially in the attack. Against a compact wetzlar defense in front of a good goalkeeper Till Klimpke, the “Zebras” hardly developed any clear chances. However, the Mittelhessen took advantage of their opportunities. About 6: 1 (7th minute) and 13: 5 (19th) they went away to 17: 8 (25th). After Anton Lindskog’s goal, THW coach Filip Jicha took his second time-out in the 25th minute.
Even after the break, the 22-year-old Klimpke showed a strong performance. Thanks to his 15 saves in total, Wetzlar’s lead was always constant. The seventh fielder was also among the guests without significant success. In the end, the HSG celebrated a well-deserved success. It was the fifth win in the past nine games against THW, the second in a row.
Swedish newcomer Oskar Sunnefeldt celebrated his Bundesliga premiere with the guests, but was unable to set any accents.
