The opening game of the Bundesliga takes place without Bayern. The season starts with a new game. The German football champions must first play the Champions League final.
After FC Bayern Munich’s participation in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, the German football champions will not open the new Bundesliga season. The defending champion will play his home game against FC Schalke 04 on Monday, September 21 at the end of the first match day.
Instead, the season starts on Friday evening September 18 with the match between Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. The German football league had already announced this approach when the game plan was announced should Bayern reach the final of the Champions League final in Portugal.
Clear victory over Lyon
After beating 3-0 in the semi-final of Olympique Lyon on Wednesday-evening, Munich will meet PSG on Sunday (9 p.m.) in Lisbon. According to the DFL, the later staging of the Bayern against Schalke match takes place “in terms of preparation time between the two competitions”.
Just three days after the start of the Bundesliga, Bayern would also have the UEFA Super Cup final on the program as Champions League winners in Hungary. Opponents on Thursday, September 24 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest would be the winners of the Europa League, Sevilla FC or Inter Milan. These two clubs will contest the final of the Europa League tournament in Cologne on Friday.
