Munich (dpa) – Unimpressed by the corona whirlpool surrounding Serge Gnabry, FC Bayern got off to a furious start with an excellent Kingsley Coman at the start of the new Champions League season.
Two months after the Lisbon triumph, the defending champion continued the impressive triumph in Europe’s best football league with a convincing 4-0 (2-0) against Atlético Madrid thanks to his latest hero. Coman (28th minute / 72nd), Leon Goretzka (41st) and Corentin Tolisso (66th) made beautiful goals against the previous favorite scare on Wednesday at the next ghost match in Munich.
After Gnabry’s positive test result the day before, Hansi Flick was already happy for kick-off on Wednesday, as his star ensemble was spared further corona failures. In addition, Joshua Kimmich was back after the birth of his second child and played a key role in building the record streak in the European top class with twelve successes.
“We had a tough job ahead of us and we mastered it with ease,” said coach Flick enthusiastically about “four great goals”. The strong Coman said: “We have a very good team, we play very well together and I hope it will stay that way.” Guest coach Diego Simeone admitted, “Bayern was simply more accurate than we are now.”
The Munich-based company will continue in Lokomotiv Moscow next Tuesday. The Russian runners-up separated Red Bull Salzburg 2-2 on Wednesday.
Coach Flick said Gnabry’s failure had “not changed much” in his plans for the Madrid game. After a balanced start, the Munich team took control of the game, even though the awkward Spaniards were brave. Niklas Süle hit the post in the 15th minute and Tolisso, who three minutes later did not visit goalkeeper Jan Oblak, had the first good chances for the home team.
In an intense game, Thomas Müller again seemed very dedicated. “What’s going on here? We’re playing against Atlético Madrid, the biggest bullies in European football,” the former world champion grumbled when he saw a yellow card for a tough game.
Shortly after, Kimmich took the lead for Bayern, tough but passable. The 25-year-old fought for the ball and served Coman perfectly, who easily overcame Oblak at close range. In August, the Frenchman had scored Munich’s last victory against Paris Saint-Germain with his goal and now rightly opened the next title hunt for the Munich team.
Even after that, the hosts seemed more determined and effective. Deservedly raised Goretzka, who was released into the penalty area after a quick attack on Coman’s template. “A great feeling is the best way to help the team,” said Goretzka at Sky.
Atlético rarely came dangerous for the Munich goal, new acquisition Luis Suárez missed twice before half time. In the preseason, the Madrid defending champions Liverpool FC under coach Jürgen Klopp had been promoted from the competition and then failed in the quarter-finals at RB Leipzig.
Shortly after the restart, the ball was in Munich’s goal. Joao Felix, who had once been committed for € 127 million, had met. But as Suárez was offside for Manuel Neuer, the goal didn’t count. Neuer had complained eagerly before. The Bayern goalkeeper caught up with Philipp Lahm with his 112th appearance in the Champions League, only record holder Müller has 116 games left.
Because Atlético now acted more offensively and aimed more often at the Munich penalty area, the defending champion had more space. The 3-0 meanwhile came from a free kick. Kimmich’s shot was blocked by Suárez, Tolisso chased the ball from 25 meters into the right corner of the goal – the decision. Moments later, after a beautiful individual performance, Coman refined the evening with his second goal. The rest was a show.
