Nyon (AP) – Defending champion FC Bayern meets Lazio in the eighth finals of the Champions League. Borussia Dortmund and new head coach Edin Terzic have to compete against Europa League winner FC Sevilla, according to the draw at the headquarters of the European Football Association (UEFA) in Nyon.
RB Leipzig will face the English champions Liverpool FC and coach Jürgen Klopp in the first knockout round. Borussia Mönchengladbach also caught an opponent from the Premier League in Manchester City.
Just like in 2014, all four German starters are in the eighth finals of Europe’s best football class. “You can say that we have improved enormously in quality in Germany and the Bundesliga,” said Bayern coach Hansi Flick of the strong record.
The first stages will take place on 15/16. and 23./24. February, the return leg on 9/10. and 16./17. March. Like BVB, Munich has house rights in the deciding match. The Gladbachers and Leipziger first play at home and then away. The other links are FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid against FC Chelsea, FC Porto against Juventus Turin and Atalanta Bergamo against Real Madrid.
Bayern, who triumphed in the final in Lisbon in the summer against PSG, is again one of the closest favorites in the new year. With 16 points and 18: 5 goals, Munich, which had already been unbeaten for 17 games in the European elite, secured the ticket to the round of 16 as the best preliminary team.
For the Dortmund players, however, a trend reversal in the Bundesliga is initially in the foreground after the recent downward trend in the sport and the separation from coach Lucien Favre. There is currently little room to look forward to the Champions League knockout round.
While the Leipziger successfully mastered the group stage this time after reaching the semi-finals in the preseason, the Gladbachers are among the top 16 teams in the main European Cup competition for the first time in 43 years.
