Leipzig (dpa) – The fact that Julian Nagelsmann finally won his first win over teacher Thomas Tuchel in the fifth attempt was just a background noise for the RB Leipzig coach.
The 33-year-old previously praised his team after the 2-1 victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The small crisis of two consecutive defeats without an own goal seems to have been overcome.
“The win was an important step for us,” said Nagelsmann, referring to the tight group H. Leipzig is second on points with Manchester United halfway through the group stage, Paris and Istanbul Basaksehir have half the result with three points each. The return match in Paris in three weeks could therefore already result in a preliminary decision. “The game is not over with the win, but of course you will go to Paris with a little less pressure”, Nagelsmann emphasized.
As good as PSG can be without its superstars Kylian Mbappé and Neymar, the team showed in the early stages. Angel Di Maria (6th minute) took the lead earlier because “we invited them with our mistakes”, Nagelsmann complained. After 16 minutes, Leipzig was able to thank goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who prevented Di Maria from falling behind with the saved penalty kick – a “winning moment” for Nagelsmann.
For Tuchel, the scene was one of three key moments. The 47-year-old saw second place in the lead of Leipzig by a hand penalty from Emil Forsberg (57th). “That was not necessary. We do a handball without having to avoid a scoring chance,” said Tuchel. Previously, Christopher Nkunku (42nd) already equalized for RB. The third decisive moment was the yellow-red card against Idrissa Gueye (69th).
Tuchel was not dissatisfied with his team’s play – probably also because of his concerns about injuries. And also highly praised Leipzig for its performance. “There are teams like Ajax, Liverpool and Leipzig that play very physically and you just have to accept that. It is difficult to steer a match against such a team”, said the former BVB coach.
Mbappé and Neymar will likely return in the return game on November 24. But Gueye and Presnel Kimpembe, who were sent off in injury time, will be missing. The concerns shift from the offensive to the defense. But Tuchel remains optimistic: “We still have every chance to win the direct game against Leipzig.” PSG is sufficient for that because of the 1-0 away goal.
