Leipzig (dpa) – Julian Nagelsmann can do without great football for success in the Champions League.
That is why the coach of RB Leipzig, after the 2-0 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir at the start of the group stage, quickly came to the fact that there was still a lot of room for improvement, especially in the second half. Most importantly, you started with a win in the demanding group with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
“You have to have a bit of a bastard mentality on the days when you don’t play a top game,” Nagelsmann emphasized, explaining: “The second half was a bit tough. We were a bit tired and not 100 percent fit in all positions.” The Spaniard Angelino was exceptionally fit, however, with his goals in the 16th and 20th minutes playing a key role in the mandatory victory against the Turkish champions.
Yussuf Poulsen also emphasized what’s important in the royal class. “At the end of the day there are three points. We know the second half was not good,” said the Danish international. Especially in view of the difficult away game in Manchester next week, the win was important in order not to be under great pressure at Old Trafford.
Despite the fairly average performance with the exception of the first 25 minutes, Leipzig’s victory was never in jeopardy. Only three of the eight Turkish chances came to Peter Gulacsi’s goal, mostly harmless and from a distance. Leipzig could even afford to give the opponent possession of the ball and wait for the counterattack.
However, this was not played consistently to the end. In particular, the replacement new addition Hee-chan Hwang revealed some weaknesses. Nagelsmann therefore asked for patience. “He still needs time. Last season he was a regular in a solid team in Salzburg. We play a little differently in Leipzig,” said the 33-year-old. Hwang tried his best, but he could certainly do better.
The South Korean may get the chance against Hertha BSC on Saturday. Nagelsmann will have to manage the strength of his management team. After all, five more games are scheduled until November 7, in addition to the duel at United, the duels with Paris and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
