London (AP) – Chelsea coach Frank Lampard has taken his new addition Kai Havertz under protection after the 0-1 defeat at Everton.
“I would say wait and give a young player time, be it a week, a month, six months or a year, and talk to me again,” said Lampard on the English football club’s website. “Because I know what kind of player Kai Havertz will be.”
The 21-year-old ex-Leverkusen man has not yet found his form this season. Havertz scored just one goal in ten league games – in mid-October in a 3-3 draw against Southampton FC. In the away defeat against Everton, the German international was replaced after 68 minutes.
“I have no problem with Kai,” assured Lampard. “Nowadays there is criticism of every player at every club who loses a game.” Havertz first has to get used to the speed of the Premier League. “From a Chelsea perspective, we should definitely be patient with Kai Havertz,” said Lampard, “because he is a top talent new to this league.”
