Gelsenkirchen (AP) – FC Schalke 04 split the day before the Bundesliga home game against coach Manuel Baum’s Arminia Bielefeld, reports said.

In the last two games of the year, Schalke’s coach of the century Huub Stevens has to look after the team. Upon request, the association initially did not comment on this.

The 41-year-old Baum took over the traditional club from David Wagner after the second day of play, but was unable to stabilize it. After twelve Bundesliga matches of the season, the team has only four points and has slipped to the bottom of the table. The team has had 28 games in the Bundesliga without a win. The last success so far came on January 17th with a 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Under Baum, only four draws in ten games, the team last lost 2-0 to SC Freiburg on Wednesday.

Stevens would reportedly only coach the team against Bielefeld and then in next Tuesday’s cup match against SSV Ulm. Then a solution can be found with a coach who has experience with relegation struggles. In conversation is Friedhelm Funkel, who was the last to take care of Fortuna Düsseldorf.

For Stevens it will be the fourth term as a Schalke coach. He had recently rescued Royal Blue from relegation between March and July 2019.
