Gelsenkirchen (dpa) – With the second coach change of the season, FC Schalke 04 wants to prevent the fall to the second division. After just ten games, the Bundesliga team split from coach Manuel Baum, confirming reports from various media outlets.
In the last two games of the year, Schalke’s coach of the century Huub Stevens takes care of the team. The 67-year-old Dutchman will be sitting on the bench against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday and in the DFB Cup at SSV Ulm on Tuesday. Mike Büskens will support as an assistant trainer.
“The home game against Arminia Bielefeld is of enormous importance to our club. The disappointing performance against SC Freiburg has shown us that the team needs a new impetus to play the game successfully. We trust Huub Stevens and Mike Büskens do just that. ”, Sports director Jochen Schneider was quoted as saying in the message. A press conference is scheduled for 14:00.
The 41-year-old Baum took over the traditional club from David Wagner after the second day of play, but was unable to stabilize it. After twelve Bundesliga matches of the season, the team has only four points and has slipped to the bottom of the table. The team has had 28 games in the Bundesliga without a win. The last success so far came on January 17th with a 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Under Baum, only four draws in ten games, the team lost for the last time on Wednesday after a terrifyingly weak performance 0-2 against SC Freiburg.
As a solution for the new year, a coach with experience in relegation struggles must be found. Friedhelm Funkel (67), who was traded as a candidate before the divorce from Baum, would be in the conversation. Most recently he was in charge of Fortuna Düsseldorf.
For Stevens it will be the fourth term as Schalke coach. Most recently, he had saved Royal Blue from relegation between March and July 2019.
