Dortmund (AP) – Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund has said goodbye to coach Lucien Favre, according to a report by “Bild”.

As the newspaper reported, the team will be informed about this step on Sunday afternoon. With that, the reluctant title candidate drew the consequences of the 1: 5 (1: 1) debacle against newly promoted VfB Stuttgart. Initially a confirmation was not available, the association was not available for a comment. Previous Favre assistant Edin Terzic should take over “Bild” by the end of the year.

The contract with 63-year-old football player Favre ran until the end of the season. Given the continuing downward trend with three home defeats in a row, the club top was forced to take this step. The desperate action against VfB cost Favre the last remaining reputation. After two and a half years in Dortmund, the Swiss also failed due to the difficult task.

The club’s management would have liked to work with Favre at least until the end of the contract in the summer to gain more time to look for a successor. After all, there are currently few alternatives on the coaching market. But concerns about missing out on next season’s Champions League qualifying, which is particularly important in Corona times, have increased the pressure to get into action.

Now the Revierclub has to look for a trainer again. After the long successful era of Jürgen Klopp (2008 to 2015), four footballers in Thomas Tuchel, Peter Bosz, Peter Stöger and Favre were already worn out. Julian Nagelsmann and Marco Rose are considered as possible preferred candidates. But both the Leipzig coach and Mönchengladbach will be under contract with their clubs after the summer.
