Cuba has suffered the greatest economic losses so far from US sanctions. Trump had previously ended Barack Obama’s overtures.
According to information from Havana, US sanctions cost Cuba $ 5.57 billion within a year. This amount, which equates to approximately 4.71 billion euros, was lost to the Caribbean island between April 2019 and March 2020 as a result of the US economic blockade, Secretary of State Bruno Rodríguez told state television Thursday evening (local time) .
Trump stops rapprochement with Cuba
He presented a report from his department on the effects of the US blockade. Losses are the highest in a year so far, and $ 1.226 billion higher than the same period a year earlier.
Under President Donald Trump, the United States halted the hesitant rapprochement with Cuba during the tenure of its predecessor Barack Obama and withdrew most of the easing of the economic embargo against the socialist island state.
Washington justifies the economic pressure on Cuba with its own government’s oppression of the Cubans. Cuba is curtailing the human rights of its citizens. In addition, Cuba – where the Communist Party is the only authorized party – supports Nicolás Maduro’s “illegitimate” government in Venezuela.
Trump has recognized Maduro’s opponent Juan Guaidó as interim president. Many Cubans in exile live in the US state of Florida, where the current presidential election is particularly hotly contested.
