Bahrain’s longest Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has passed away. Citing the palaces of the country, Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported that he was 74 at the time of his death. King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has declared a week’s mourning for the death of Sheikh Khalifa.
Sheikh Khalifa has been Prime Minister of Bahrain for decades. He retained power in 2011 despite allegations of corruption during the Arab Spring. He was in that position until his death.
Bahrain news agency BNA reported that Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa died at the Mayo Clinic in the US on Wednesday morning. Condoling the Prime Minister’s death, the country’s flag will be hoisted at half mast for a week. In addition, all ministry and government offices will remain closed for the next three weeks to pay tribute to Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa. The order will be effective from Thursday.
Bahrain’s state news agency said the burial would begin after the body was brought back from the US. However, large ceremonies are banned during the funeral procession. His burial will be completed in the presence of a certain number of relatives.
