Berlin (dpa) – Oliver Bierhoff fears that the 2021 European Football Championship could become a ghost game tournament due to the Corona crisis.
“I believe that taking care of a team is very possible if it is always shielded in some kind of bubble. Unfortunately it becomes much more difficult and critical when it comes to the public question: for me the big question is whether this EM is a Fanfest or just a European football championship with games ”, said the DFB director in an interview with ran.de.
The 52-year-old does not expect a complete cancellation despite the currently rising corona numbers. “But from today’s perspective, you could probably play a game next summer,” said Bierhoff. In general balancing of sporting and economic criteria, it may be necessary to accept an exclusion of spectators from the 12-nation tournament from June 11 to July 11, 2021.
“We saw in the Champions League that it can work. Even though in the end it was of course far from what we know it is. Even die-hard Bayern fans have told me they were happy with the title,” but they still missed something. That will remain so as long as the fans are not allowed to enter the stadium ”, said Bierhoff.
It is still uncertain whether the selection of national coach Joachim Löw will be able to play for fans again in October against Turkey and Switzerland or during a guest appearance in Ukraine. The German national team will play their three group matches at the European Championship against France (June 15), Portugal (June 19) and a play-off winner (June 23) in Munich.
