Djokovic had angrily knocked a ball away against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in his round of 16 in New York on Sunday after a lost service game in the first set and hit a linesman. Djokovic did not hit the ball in the direction of the linesman on purpose, but went down and then had obvious breathing problems.

“I am extremely sorry for causing her so much stress. So unintentional. So wrong,” said Djokovic’s statement. He asked the tournament organizers that the linesman was feeling good. The top favorite did not appear at the usual press conference after his departure.

“I accept every decision”

What happened? Djokovic, the clear tournament favorite, the undefeated dominator of this year’s tour, had just taken a break to 5-6 in the first set of his round of 16 duels against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta when he fatally knocked a ball backwards. Suddenly, a linesman, apparently hit in the larynx, dropped to the ground and gasped. Later, according to Eurosport information, the woman should have felt better again.

The first dramatic scenes, which his opponent Carreno Busta also said was “shocked” by his own story, were followed by minute-long discussions. “I accept every decision,” said Djokovic, the officials ultimately had no choice. According to a statement from the US Tennis Association (USTA), Djokovic will lose not only his shot at the title, but all the world ranking points earned in the tournament and the prize money – plus a possible fine.
