Vieste (dpa) – André Greipel’s teammate Alex Dowsett has given the professional cycling team Israel Start-Up Nation its first major victory in professional cycling.
The Briton single-handedly won the eighth stage of the 103rd Giro d’Italia over 200 kilometers from Giovinazzo to Vieste ahead of the Italian Salvatore Puccio and his fellow countryman Matthew Holmes.
Dowsett had left a leading group at more than 18 kilometers from the finish and eventually had a lead of 1:15 minutes. The main platoon with all jerseys reached the finish 14 minutes behind. The pink jersey of the overall winner is still worn by the Portuguese Joao Almeida, 43 seconds ahead of the Spaniard Pello Bilbao.
For Simon Yates, who originally entered the Giro as a favorite, the race is over after a positive Corona test. The 28-year-old showed mild symptoms on Friday after the seventh stage. Both a rapid test and later a PCR test had confirmed the infection with the corona virus. The Climbing Specialist was 21st overall, 3:52 minutes behind leading Portuguese Jorge Almeida.
The Giro continues on Sunday with the ninth stage over 208 kilometers from San Salvo to Roccaraso. Two mountains, each in the first and second category, can change the general classification.
