Berlin (dpa) – Hansi Flick quickly checked his stars’ dropouts in uncomfortable Berlin. But some concerns remain about the end-of-year emissions from flat-looking FC Bayern.

“The wanger engine” started too late, leader Thomas Müller said after the German record champion’s second winless Bundesliga game. Especially the performance in the first part of the 1-1 draw to 1. FC Union and a renewed deficit in the fifth league match in a row make Munich brood. “We do not intend to be careless for the first 20 minutes. It is too often that we are taken by surprise,” said attacking player Müller.

Head coach Flick no longer wants to deal with the four points lost in the two most recent games given the double burden with game days number 12 and 13, which has yet to come before Christmas. As a result, the battle for first place in the second Special Corona season has become more exciting. “We are still at the table. The most important thing now is to check the match, otherwise be on the field against Wolfsburg and Leverkusen”, the 55-year-old emphasized. “The players are already under a lot of stress, but we already have the quality to bring a team on the field in the next two games that will score points.”

Flick and its players, who cleared all titles in 2020, are banning themselves from a mourning mode. “It’s too easy if you blame it. We have to maintain the workload,” said Captain Manuel Neuer. The goalkeeper had a different explanation for the draw with brave Berliners: “These are simple mistakes that happen to us. We have to try to get more matches on zero.”

Bayern has already conceded 17 goals, which is only mediocre in the league and hasn’t happened to Munich for 39 years. Flick added in perspective: “We often have to change the load, because coordination is not possible like last season.” Ailing defense leader Niklas Süle was missing on the cold Berlin night, but he could be back on Wednesday against Wolfsburg, who is still unbeaten in the league. Driver Leon Goretzka dropped out due to an upper leg injury. Defensive talent Tanguy Nianzou has to take a break for at least two months after a muscle fracture.

With his most important goal in the upper house of football, Grischa Prömel had brought the hosts, who defended with discipline and always waited for their opponents, to take the lead after just four minutes. That underscored last year’s new climber’s Union maturity, but also confirmed Bayern’s defensive sensitivity. Bayern had previously analyzed the standard strength of the iron and therefore also the corners of captain Christopher Trimmel, the coach showed. But: “In the first minutes we were not on the field as planned,” said Bayern coach Flick.

“That has nothing to do with fatigue, that is negligence,” noted record international Lothar Matthäus as a Sky expert. Union had more of the best scoring opportunities, especially through Liverpool loaner Taiwo Awoniyi, to create the big surprise. But Bayern’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski equaled Bayern in his 200th Bundesliga game with his 13th goal of the season (67th).

“We can play better football”, Flick emphasized: “We have to live with the 1-1 draw. It will be a difficult season, we knew that in advance.” Leipzig and Leverkusen scratch Bavaria’s golden throne. And Borussia Dortmund has not written off Flick after BVB’s 5-1 bankruptcy against VfB Stuttgart: “There are still 23 game days to play. A lot will change. Dortmund has tremendous quality. They will not be the season. Donate.”
