RB Leipzig celebrated a successful start to the new Champions League season. The team of trainer Julian Nagelsmann got off to a good start – and had a match winner in the ranks.

Double goalscorer Angelino gave RB Leipzig a perfect start in the Champions League and makes the Saxons dream of the next fairytale on the European football stage. The rampant Spaniard scored both goals in last year’s semi-finalists’ 2-0 (2-0) against Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir (16/20). In Group H with the heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, the Bundesliga team achieved a good starting position in front of 999 spectators with the mandatory victory.

Angelino hits brilliantly

63 days after the loss of PSG at the final tournament in Lisbon, Leipzig started the new season at full speed. In the offensive system, RB immediately put the guests under pressure. Dayot Upamecano forced visiting goalkeeper Mert Günok to make a strong save (6th), but for his own goal the defender got the ball just in front of the oncoming Enzo Crivelli (9th).

Angelino, on loan from Manchester City, only got on the turn after good preparatory work by Kevin Kampl. Nagelsmann roared for joy in the rainy evening skies of Leipzig. After Yussuf Poulsen captured the ball less than five minutes later, Christopher Nkunku Angelino served for a reassuring second RB goal. For the Spaniard, the fourth goal in the last three games. “A first win today is very important”, said Nagelsmann before the kick-off at DAZN. “Absolutely achievable.”

Hardly any resistance from the Erdogan Club

The guests from Turkey showed little resistance after the double setback in Erdogan’s first Champions League match. Leipzig, which had to do without Lukas Klostermann, who had probably been missing for a long time, played calmer, faster. Dani Olmo tested Günok with a long shot (29th). Basaksehir coach Okan Buruk had to do without Junior Caicara in the 25th minute, who apparently was seriously injured and was taken from the interior on a stretcher.

RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had to be wide awake after half an hour against Edin Visca (31st). Initially, however, there were only brief phases where the Nagelsmann-Elf ran out of game controls a bit. In the second half Nagelsmann switched to his usual three-man chain, newcomer Hee-Chan Hwang came on for Emil Forsberg. The new striker negligently lost the ball in front of the Istanbul goal (60th).

The almost 1000 spectators in a good mood created a bit of the atmosphere of the European Cup. Due to the increasing corona figures in the region, 8,500 already raffled tickets were canceled in the short term. In the middle of the second half, the Leipzig fans always saw carefree hosts. Twenty minutes before time, 21-year-old newcomer Justin Kluivert made his debut for the Saxons.

Amadou Haidara, on the other hand, was absent from RB after being infected with the corona virus. RB announced the test result for the competition. “He’s symptom-free” and gets “all the support he needs,” said sports director Markus Krösche.
