Eindhoven / Naples (dpa) – Ex-world champion Mario Götze immediately scored for his new club PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League, but in the end the Orange started with a defeat.
After his goal in the league debut, the former Dortmunder scored 1-0 against FC Granada shortly before halftime. Thanks to goals from Jorge Molina (57th) and Darwin Machis (66th), the Spaniards turned the game to a 2-1 (0-1) victory in just nine minutes.
Götze had to leave the field before half-time. “Mario had to be replaced injured because he had muscle problems,” said coach Roger Schmidt on the online portal “Sportbuzzer” before the change. “Even before the game, he felt like it was tweaking.” Ex-Stuttgart Timo Baumgartl and Philipp Max, who moved from FC Augsburg to PSV for eight million euros, played, but could not prevent the defeat.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bernd Leno took a 2: 1 (0: 1) win away with Arsenal. After the 0-1 deficit of Greece Taxiarchis Fountas (51st), for whom Leno did not look good, David Luiz (70th) and the substitute ex-Dortmund Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (74th) prevented a nasty surprise within four minutes for the visitors. Coach Mikel Arteta had made six changes to the starting line-up from the Premier League game against Manchester City (0: 1).
Despite 13 positively tested players and therefore in quarantine, AZ Alkmaar surprisingly recorded a 1-0 (0-0) victory in the game at SSC Napoli, for which Dani de Wit scored with his goal in the 57th minute. Ex-Leipzig Diego Demme came on as a substitute in the 66th minute, but was also unable to prevent the defeat of Naples.
Luca Waldschmidt during his Europa League debut with Benfica Lisbon and ex-Dortmunder Julian Weigl celebrated a 4-2 (2-1) victory at Lech Posen. The Uruguayan Darwin scored three times (42nd, 60th, 90th + 3), and the Portuguese Pizzi converted a penalty kick for Benfica after nine minutes. Ex-Nuremberg Mikael Ishak was awarded the Poles (15th, 48th).
