Berlin (dpa) – After scoring a memorable goal from around 50 meters, Mario Götze and PSV Eindhoven averted a painful defeat to Cyprus and took their first victory in the Europa League this season.
The 28-year-old world champion hero from 2014 made up for a 0: 1 deficit with the Dutch first division and eventually won 2: 1 (1: 1) at FC Omonoia Nicosia.
The hosts, who are fourth in the national competition, took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to Jordi Gómez. The Spaniard simply withdrew from his own half. Eindhoven goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo, on loan from RB Leipzig, had placed himself well in front of his sixteen and was unable to catch the ball when running backwards. Donyell Malen equalized before the break (40th). It was he who made the decision in the second minute of injury time and put PSV in second place in Group E.
AS Roma also struggled. At home it was only enough to score an out against CSKA Sofia. The SSC Napoli came to a 1-0 (0-0) at Real Sociedad San Sebastian. Arsenal FC had far fewer problems – the Gunners won 3-0 (2-0) against FC Dundalk.
One of the biggest problems was Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat at FC Antwerp on match day two. With 0: 1 (0: 1), the team of star coach José Mourinho lost to the Belgians. “We can only blame ourselves and praise our opponents,” said the 57-year-old Portuguese. For Mourinho, according to the BBC, it is the first bankruptcy in the Europa League since November 2016. Lior Refaeov scored the only goal.
Mourinho tried everything, switching four times during the break and later one star striker, Harry Kane, before another, Gareth Bale – none of this helped. “I’d rather praise our opponents for playing a great game than accuse us of a terrible game. But I have to do both,” said Mourinho. Antwerp is first in group J with six points, while Spurs is second with three points.
AC Milan achieved the best results from two games. And that although the superstar missed a great opportunity. Zlatan Ibrahimovic laughed at himself. The 39-year-old Swede with the predicate for particularly spectacular and especially many goals missed a penalty against Sparta Prague in the 36th minute. The crossbar hit the ball instead of landing in the net.
Ibrahimovic, who was able to rest after the break and his substitution, finally laughed well: Milan eventually won the match against the still pointless Czechs with 3-0 (1-0) in the famous San Siro and leads group H.
The players of Wolfsberger AC from Austria turned out to be much more accurate than Ibrahimovic in Milan. The guests scored three goals in a surprising 4-1 (2-0) victory over Feyenoord Rotterdam in Group K from eleven meters. AC captain Michael Liendl also looked forward to a three-pack and the lead in the championship.
