Hamburg (dpa) – New crowd favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas continues to perform confidently at the Hamburg European Open.
The sixth in the tennis world ranking beat Dusan Lajovic 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 2 and reached the semi-finals without losing a set. There, the 22-year-old Greek meets the Chilean Cristian Garin on Saturday (3.30 pm). He defeated Kazakhs Alexander Bublik 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4.
The second semifinal will be played by last year’s finalist Andrej Rublev and the Norwegian Casper Ruud (1.30 pm). The 22-year-old Russian Rublev won 6: 2, 7: 5 against Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. Ruud, last year in Hamburg in the round of 16, beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7: 5, 3: 6, 6: 1.
After all German players were quickly eliminated, Tsitsipas, seeded number two, is the big star of the € 1.2 million sand court event. However, he initially fought 30-year-old Lajovic. The Serb kept up his varying play from the baseline in the first set.
Tsitsipas only ensured the even passage in the tiebreaker. In the second section, the favorite had no more problems against his opponent, who had already reached the quarter-finals in Hamburg in 2014. After 1:36 pm he transformed the match point.
Tsitsipas then greeted the cheering 2,200 spectators with a “Moin, Moin”. “A perfect day,” he said. “The weather is nice, the fans are there and I played well.” And he already promised, “I look forward to coming back next year.”
