Augsburg (AP) – Augsburg captain Daniel Baier should get the promised full-row farewell match in the home arena. Stefan Reuter, general manager of the Swabian Bundesliga club, announced this in an interview via Twitter.
“We want to organize a farewell match for him here in the WWK Arena, when spectators are allowed back in, when the stadium is allowed to fill up again,” said Reuter. “He can invite his boys who have accompanied him over the years,” said the Augsburg FC manager, looking forward to “having a great day with Dani.”
After more than a decade with the FCA, Baier now concludes that the defensive midfielder’s contract had been canceled “by mutual agreement.” The 36-year-old has been wearing the FCA jersey with a small break since the 2008/09 season, in which he returned to VfL Wolfsburg as a loan player for six months. Baier was on the ball in 355 competitive matches for FC Augsburg.
In mid-September, the Augsburg team will start their tenth Bundesliga season in a row. “The expectation is huge,” said Reuter, “on the whole, the squad is underway. We are still in talks with one player or another – maybe handing over or lending out. Something could still happen in the coming weeks . ” said the 53-year-old.
The Bundesliga anniversary season will also be a very special season for the FCA. “We currently live with Corona and it will certainly stay with us for a while,” said Reuter. “We hope that spectators will be admitted step by step this season and that we will get the crisis – worldwide – under control.”
