Troubled Bundesliga club Schalke 04 changes coach again – and provides a surprise: Huub Stevens takes over as coach of the Royal Blues for the fourth time.
FC Schalke 04 has been separated from trainer Manuel Baum. For the next two games against Arminia Bielefeld in the league and against SSV Ulm in the DFB Cup, Huub Stevens will take over the troubled Bundesliga club as coach. Various media report this, including the WDR, Sport1 and “Kicker”.
The Dutchman, who was chosen by Schalke fans as ‘coach of the century’ of the club and was last a member of the supervisory board of the Royal Blues, now takes over the coaching task at Schalke for the fourth time. The 67-year-old last jumped as a firefighter at S04 in the second half of the 2018/2019 season. Together with his ex-player Mike Büskens as assistant coach, the two-time DFB Cup winner saved the Gelsenkirchen team from falling into the second division. Büskens will again act as Stevens’s assistant.
Baum was hired by Schalke for the third match day of the current Bundesliga season as the successor to the previously fired David Wagner. The former Augsburg coach was unable to win any of his ten Bundesliga games, but the Royal Blues have not won 28 games over the seasons. Baum’s contract will run until the summer of 2022.
