At least 15 people have died in a stampede at a stadium near the Pakistani Consulate in eastern Afghanistan. Many more were injured. Qatar-based Al Jazeera reports.
The Pakistani consulate in Afghanistan began issuing visas last week after being closed for seven months due to the situation in Corona. Residents and residents of the neighboring state have gathered at the consulate in Jalalabad, Nangarhar province to collect visas since morning. Some people are submitting medical visas, while others want to go to Pakistan to see relatives.
Authorities said on Wednesday that thousands of Afghans had gathered to take their visas. He was asked to go to the nearest football stadium to avoid congestion at the Visa Center. Fifteen people were killed there.
Nangarhar Provincial Council member Sohrab Qadri said that 11 of the dead were women. Many of the injured are elderly.
Al Jazeera’s Afghan correspondent said rumors were circulating on social media that visas would be issued to more people on this day than ever before. And that’s why so many people gathered. As soon as the stadium gate opened, there was a stampede.
