The federal government wants to absorb the economic effects of the corona crisis with historically high debts. For CDU presidential candidate Friedrich Merz, this is the completely wrong strategy.

CDU politician Friedrich Merz, who is running for party chairmanship, chides Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) for financing Corona state aid through historically high debts. “The Treasury Secretary is currently knocking the money as if it will not be there tomorrow. Our children will have to pay for everything,” said Merz of “Bild am Sonntag”. Even in the corona crisis, it is important to be careful with taxpayers’ money. It was true that it was correct to let go of the debt brake of the Basic Law this year. “But letting go of the brakes doesn’t mean you have to race down the mountain at full throttle.”
According to preliminary data from the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the federal government, states, municipalities and social security funds spent 51.6 billion euros more in the first half of the year than they received. Economic output is projected to decline by 5.8 percent this year. As a result, not only trade and sales tax collapse, but also income tax due to the drastic reduction in working hours.
Merz is calling for talks with corona protesters
Merz is also critical of the federal government’s decision to extend the temporary allowance until the end of 2021. “A working time allowance is there to overcome a crisis in the short term. If paid for too long, there is a risk that the labor market is being blocked, “said Merz. “Then employees who are urgently needed in other companies will be detained in their old companies with shorter working hours.”
In view of protests against the Corona state’s measures, Merz demanded more willingness to speak from the federal government: “Above all, politics must take the existential fears of many people seriously. Many are pushing to curtail their freedom of rights. “This is a legitimate concern facing politicians.” The limit is always reached when violence, violations and attacks on police officers are added.
Speaking of the protesters protesting the Corona measures, the CDU politician said: “There are conspiracy theorists, left-wing radicals and right-wing radicals, a colorful people, of whom probably very few can be reached. But there are at least as many, who you can and should win a serious conversation. “
