Munich (dpa) – This Supercup classic fascinates every year. FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund meet again in a title match – the eighth time in total and the seventh time since their reintroduction in 2010.
“The Super Cup is part of German football and we are trying to win the game,” said Bayern coach Hansi Flick. “We can compete with the best in Germany. This game will help us.” BVB hopes that too. “It’s a nice feeling to be where we are when we play against the supposedly best team in Europe or the world,” said Marco Reus before the game on Wednesday (8.30 pm / ZDF and DAZN).
DEFEATS: Both teams faced surprising bankruptcies. Bayern lost in Hoffenheim (1: 4). “Unfortunately, we have not implemented some of the guidelines of our game very well: little depth, little protection. We have clearly stated that we want to play differently at Bayern,” said Flick. “But everyone is self-critical enough and knows it.” Dortmund lost in Augsburg (0-2). “We have to have a different mindset and try to win this game because it is important to us in the coming weeks,” said Reus.
STAFF: FC Bayern has to do without Leroy Sané (knee capsule injury), David Alaba (muscle problems) is injured. BVB misses goalkeeper Roman Bürki and young star Jadon Sancho with respiratory infections. Thorgan Hazard (muscle injury) is also out. Lukasz Piszczek, on the other hand, is fit again after back pain.
HISTORY: In 2018 FC Bayern won the German Supercup for the seventh time to become the record winner in this competition. In 2019 BVB narrowed the gap with the 2-0 win against Munich and could now draw.
TORJÄGERDUELL: Robert Lewandowski can hope this week for the freestyle to music for “Europe’s Footballer of the Year”. Flick’s “World’s Best Goalscorer” wants to play – and score – from the start after his temporary hiatus against Hoffenheim. “Lewy is an even more complete forward because of his age and experience. His chances are huge. But I see Erling (Haaland) every day and I can only say that he is on the right track,” said Reus. Flick is also confident that young BVB Noor Haaland will have a great career. “He is well on his way to become one of the best goalscorers in the world,” said the Bayern coach.
FRUSTSPIELE: The Dortmunders went down regularly in Munich in recent years. 0: 6, 0: 5 and 0: 4 are the terrifying results. “We need to show a different body language, be more toxic, play with more emotions, and then stay calm in phases of being pushed back in,” Captain Reus warned.
TITLE HUNGER: Triple from Champions League, Cup and Championship, plus the European Supercup – FC Bayern races from title to title. After the Supercup, the Club World Cup is still the next championship.
GHOST GAME: Players must dispense with spectators in the stadium. The reason is the current pandemic in Munich. At the start of the Bundesliga in the Allianz Arena, no stadium visitors were allowed in the short term. The fans can see the game in Germany on ZDF and DAZN. In total, the game is broadcast in more than 200 countries.
