Hamburg (dpa) – veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber was eliminated in the first round of the Hamburg European Open. The 36-year-old tennis professional from Augsburg had to admit defeat to number six seeded Italian Fabio Fognini after a hard fight of 6: 4, 1: 6, 5: 7.
For Kohlschreiber it was only the third loss against one of his favorite opponents in the tenth clash. After 2:19 hours, Fognini used his first match ball in the Rothenbaum stadium. Before that, Dominik Koepfer and Yannick Hanfmann had each reached the round of 16. Jan-Lennard Struff is the fourth German still on duty at the beginning of the evening.
