For the first time in US history, a woman has been elected vice president. This isn’t the only thing that makes Kamala Harris the nation’s beacon of hope.

As the first woman, the first black, and the first American of Indian roots to run for the office of Vice President of the US, Kamala Harris was seen by many Democrats as the real hope for the election. In the campaign, one of her jobs was to mobilize non-white voters for Joe Biden. Once in office, she is expected to speak up for their concerns for the next four years.

Harris has Jamaican and Indian roots

Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California, where she grew up in an African American community. Her father emigrated from Jamaica to the United States to study economics. Her mother – a cancer researcher and civil rights activist – was from India.

Several times over the course of her career, Harris was the first: after her studies in Washington and California, she became the first black district attorney in San Francisco. In 2010, she became the first woman to hold the position of attorney general in her home state. She joined the United States Senate in 2017 as the first black woman to represent California – and was the second African American woman to sit in the House of Representatives.

“Americans want a hunter”

On the day to commemorate civil rights activist Martin Luther King 2019, Harris announced her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. “The Americans want a fighter, they want someone who will fight hard for them,” she said at the time. Her opponents criticized her for not being ideologically localized and tried to use her career in the judiciary against her: they saw some of her decisions as contrary to her promise to reform a “broken” criminal justice system.

That summer, Biden Harris made his running mate. Entire articles dealt with the fact that Harris usually wore sneakers during election campaigns, as her husband Douglas Emhoff often did. Some saw it as an expression of their drive for action. Biden describes Harris as a “fearless hunter”. By electing her, he paved the way for a black president in the US in the not-too-distant future. President-elect Biden is 77 years old – Harris, 56, could inherit him, at least as the next Democratic candidate for president.
