Prague (AP) – The Czech Republic is concerned about football legend Antonin Panenka. The 71-year-old is in a serious condition in the hospital in intensive care, said FK Bohemians Prague, of which he is honorary chairman.
Panenka was associated with life-sustaining machines. According to the association, a test for the corona virus was positive. The midfielder immortalized himself in football dictionaries with the so-called Panenka-lifter in the final of the European Championship in Belgrade in 1976 against Germany. He threw the ball into the center of the goal with the decisive penalty kick and fooled German goalkeeper Sepp Maier – Czechoslovakia became European champions.
After his successful time at Bohemians Prague, Panenka moved to Rapid Vienna in 1981; at the club he was two-time Austrian champion. He ended his active career at the age of 45 after stints at other clubs in the Alpine Republic.
